I-26 Head-On Collision Kills Three in Calhoun

Around 12:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, near mile marker 37 on Interstate 26, a Nissan Altima crossed over the median into the westbound lane.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol officers, the Nissan struck an RV traveling in the westbound lane head-on.

One person in the Altima was killed and two people in the RV. South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the accident.

Calhoun County Coroner, Donnie Porth, said Tyrica Shuler, 27 of Orangeburg was the one person who was killed in the Nissan Altima. According to Porth, the occupants of the RV who died were Bobby Knox, 67, and Donna Knox, 63, both of Statesville, North Carolina.

This accident brings the death toll on Calhoun County roads to five so far this year. Authorities at South Carolina’s Department of Public Safety report that at this time last year one person had died on the same roads.

Orangeburg County has also seen an increase in traffic-related deaths this year, with a total of four deaths this year compared to two last year at the same time.

The state of South Carolina has a reported 108 roadway deaths as of February 16, which is up from 100 deaths in the state at this time last year.
